Key takeaways
- A1 is the first of the six CEFR levels. The Council of Europe calls it Breakthrough, and in French it is the niveau introductif or de découverte.
- A1 describes concrete, prepared language: greeting people, introducing yourself, giving personal details, and naming things in your immediate surroundings.
- The clause most people skip is the condition attached to A1: it works provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help you. Remove that cooperation and A1 stops functioning.
- A1 is not the same as knowing nothing, and it is not the same as being a false beginner. It is a described, certifiable level with its own DELF diploma.
- A1 does not meet any French residence or nationality requirement. The lowest administrative threshold is A2, for a first multi-year residence permit.
A1 level in French means you can handle a first contact. You can greet someone, say who you are and where you are from, give your address and phone number, name what is on the table in front of you, and answer a direct question about yourself. Everything at this level is concrete, immediate and largely prepared.
The CEFR calls A1 the Breakthrough level. In French it is the niveau introductif ou de découverte. It is the smallest complete unit of the framework: not a stepping stone toward a real level, but a described level in its own right, with its own diploma.
The clause that defines A1
Most descriptions of A1 list what you can do and stop there. The official wording does something more useful, because it attaches a condition:
Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
That final clause is the whole level. "Provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help" is not a footnote, it is the operating condition. A1 works when your interlocutor is cooperating with you. It stops working the moment they speak at normal speed, or stop simplifying, or lose patience.
Every level above A1 is, in part, a story about removing that dependency. A2 lets you exchange rather than only produce. B1 removes the need for anyone to slow down at all.
"Needs of a concrete type" is the other load-bearing phrase. A1 language attaches to things you can point at. Abstraction, opinion and hypothesis are not simply harder at A1, they are outside it.
What A1 lets you actually do
First contact. You can greet someone appropriately, introduce yourself and someone else, and say goodbye. You can manage vous in the situations where it matters.
Personal details. You can give and ask for a name, nationality, age, address, phone number and job. This is the densest, most reliable part of A1, and it is why exams at this level lean on forms.
Immediate needs. You can order a drink, ask the price, buy a ticket, and ask where something is, using set phrases.
Naming your surroundings. You can name common objects, rooms, family members, days, numbers and colours.
Very short writing. You can complete a form and write a few simple sentences about yourself, which is exactly why the DELF A1 writing paper is built as a form to fill in plus a short piece of personal correspondence. You can see both tasks in a free DELF A1 sample paper with the answer key.
What remains out of reach. Nearly everything unprepared. You cannot follow a conversation between two other people, understand an announcement, explain a problem, or use the past tense reliably.

What A1 is officially good for
Being straightforward about this is more useful than overselling it.
A1 meets no French immigration requirement. The lowest administrative threshold in France is A2, which since 1 January 2026 is required for a first carte de séjour pluriannuelle. B1 covers the ten-year carte de résident, and B2 is required for naturalisation. If your goal is administrative, A1 is a staging post rather than a destination, and the ladder is set out in what A2 level in French means.
Where A1 does count. It is a genuine credential in three settings. Schools use DELF A1 as a first certification for pupils beginning French. Employers and universities accept it as evidence that a stated beginner has real, measured ability rather than a self-assessment. And for adult learners, it functions as proof of progress early enough to still be motivating, which is not a small thing in a language whose plateau arrives later.
A1 for children and teenagers. DELF Prim and DELF junior both run at A1, with the same level descriptor and age-appropriate material. The junior and scolaire versions are covered in the guide to DELF junior and scolaire.
Why A1 is worth certifying rather than skipping
A common instinct is to skip A1 and aim straight at A2, on the grounds that A1 is too easy to be worth the fee. That reasoning holds for some people and not for others.
Skipping makes sense if you already exchange information comfortably and you are simply confirming a level you have. Taking A1 makes sense if you have been studying without any external measurement, because the first exam you sit teaches you the format, the timing and the experience of being assessed in French. Learning those under low stakes at A1 is considerably cheaper than learning them at B2, where the format itself accounts for a meaningful share of the marks people lose.
There is also a straightforward practical argument: DELF diplomas do not expire. An A1 obtained now stays valid permanently, which is not true of score-based tests like the TCF and TEF. That distinction is covered in DELF vs TCF.
How to tell whether you are at A1
Four checks:
- The introduction test. Can you introduce yourself for thirty seconds without preparing it first? Name, origin, job, where you live, one thing you like.
- The slow-speech test. Ask someone to speak slowly and clearly about a concrete topic. Do you follow the gist? If yes, you are at A1. If you follow it at normal speed, you are past A1.
- The form test. Could you complete a registration form in French without a dictionary? Surname, first name, date of birth, nationality, address, profession.
- The pointing test. Look around the room and name ten things. A1 gives you the vocabulary of your immediate surroundings.
If those land, the DELF A1 exam is a realistic target, and the next thing worth reading is what changes at the level above.
Frequently asked questions
Is A1 French useful?
It is useful as a foundation and as a first certification, but it does not make you independent in French and it meets no immigration requirement in France. Its value is that it is measured: it turns "I am a beginner" into a documented level.
How long does it take to reach A1 in French?
Commonly quoted estimates put A1 at roughly 80 to 100 hours of study from zero, against 180 to 200 for A2. Speakers of another Romance language usually move faster, and consistency matters more than intensity at this stage.
What is the difference between A1 level and DELF A1?
A1 is a level on the CEFR scale, meaning a description of what you can do. DELF A1 is a diploma certifying that you demonstrated it in an exam. DELF A1 has four sections marked out of 25 each. You need 50 out of 100 overall, with no section below 5.
Can I skip A1 and take DELF A2 directly?
Yes. DELF levels are independent diplomas and there is no requirement to hold a lower one first. Sitting A1 is worth it mainly if you want exam experience under low stakes, or a certificate earlier in your learning.
Is A1 enough for a French visa or residence permit?
No. Since 1 January 2026, a first carte de séjour pluriannuelle requires A2, a carte de résident requires B1, and naturalisation requires B2. Requirements vary by permit type, so confirm your own case with the prefecture handling your file.
