Speakers, places and situations

Who is talking to whom, what kind of document you are in, and where it happens. Most of it is settled in the first twenty seconds.

By the end of this lesson

  • Work out the relationship between two speakers from the names, the pronouns and the greeting.
  • Tell a dialogue, a radio interview and a reportage apart in the opening seconds.
  • Read a setting from background sound and from what the speakers are doing.
  • Separate the practical details that get someone to a place from the ones that are decoration.
  • Track who does what, in your own notes, when one document holds several people and several activities.
