Detecting tone and hidden stance
Neutral or engaged is only the first sort. Four tones, the labels the paper prints, and the small words that show how sure the author is.
By the end of this lesson
- Tell polémique, pessimiste, sceptique and ironique apart from the wording alone.
- Recognise the tone labels the paper prints in its three options, injonctif included.
- Spot modalisation and say whether the author is marking certainty or doubt.
- Read a reporting verb like prétendre for the distance it puts between the author and a claim.
- Mark doubt words, reporting verbs and conditionals in the margin as you read.
