1 → B. “la mairie a acheté les livres” (the town hall bought the books): that is the only thing the town hall paid for in this project.

Trap: the bus is a gift from a transport company, and the work was done by volunteers, who were not paid.

2 → A. “Nadia est au volant” (Nadia is at the wheel): being “au volant” means driving a vehicle.

Trap: all three actions are in the article, but Hugo is the one who helps readers and Lina the one who repairs the books.

3 → C. “le samedi sur la place du marché” (on Saturdays on the market square): each day has its own place, and Saturday’s is the market square.

Trap: the school is the Tuesday stop and the stadium the Thursday one.

4 → C. “les journaux se lisent sur place, dans les fauteuils” (newspapers are read on the spot, in the armchairs): you read them in the bus, they do not leave it.

Trap: “Les bandes dessinées s’empruntent aussi” means comics can be borrowed too, just like the books.

5 → B. “Quand le bus n’est pas là, on peut rendre ses livres à la boulangerie” (when the bus is not there, you can return your books at the bakery): “rendre” a book means bringing it back.

Trap: the town hall bought the books and the school is one of the bus stops, but nothing is returned there.

Mon premier jour de stageshort title, suited to a blog post

Mes collègues étaient très sympathiques et ils parlaient lentement pour m’aider.the people met, described in the imparfait

Tomásimpressions with a reason (“parce que”), required by the task

Examiner's note: The text tells the day in order (“d’abord”, “ensuite”, “le soir”) in the passé composé and the imparfait, introduces the people met and gives impressions with a reason (“très intéressante, parce que j’ai appris beaucoup de mots nouveaux”): task fulfilment and coherence get full marks. Half a point is withheld on the other three criteria. Sociolinguistic appropriateness: the tone is right, but the post never speaks to the readers of the blog. Vocabulary: correct, but the adjectives are common ones and “très” is used twice. Grammar: the sentences are accurate, with only one more complex structure (“Samuel, qui m’a tout expliqué”). The exercise is assessed on the official grid, marked out of 12.5 points.

    • A congé
    • B retraite
    • C chômage
See the answer key +
1 → C. An “infirmière” (nurse) works in a hospital and looks after patients.
2 → A. “Passer un entretien” means meeting the employer for a job interview before being hired.

Trap: “salaire” (pay) and “métier” (occupation) are also work words, but neither goes with the verb “passer”.

3 → C. You revise before you “passer un examen”, which means to sit an exam.

Trap: in French you “suivre un cours” (take a class), you do not “passer” it. And “passer un examen” means to sit an exam, not to pass it.

4 → B. The “cuisinier” (cook) prepares the dishes in the restaurant kitchen.

Trap: the “serveur” (waiter) also works in the restaurant, but he brings the dishes to the customers, he does not prepare them.

5 → A. A “jour de congé” is a day off, a day when an employee does not work.

Trap: “la retraite” (retirement) starts at the end of working life, and “le chômage” (unemployment) is the situation of someone without a job. Neither is a day of the week.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real exam paper?+

No. Official exam papers are never published. This sample paper was written to the exact format of the exam (exercise types, scoring, timing) for faithful practice.

How is this paper different from the other two DELF A2 sample papers?+

The three papers do not repeat each other. This one has a news article, a story for a blog (exercise 1 of the writing section, in a work situation) and work and study vocabulary. The first paper is built on a neighbourhood notice and a friendly message, the second on a confirmation letter and a reply to an invitation.
