1 → C. The town hall “n’a posé qu’une condition” (set only one condition): that nothing be built there, not even a tool shed. All it asks is that the land stays free of buildings.

Trap: the open gate and the ban on selling are indeed rules of the garden, but “ce sont les membres” (it is the members) who chose them. The town hall does not require them.

2 → B. The harvest is shared “entre ceux qui sont venus jardiner dans la semaine” (among those who came to garden during the week): you have to have taken part to get a share.

Trap: being a member is not enough, since the families “qui ne sont pas venues n’ont rien” (who did not come get nothing). And the community grocery only receives “ce qui reste” (what is left).

3 → A. Bernard explains that, with his “petite retraite” (small pension), the vegetables “comptent dans [s]on budget” (matter in his budget): he comes first of all to spend less.

Trap: meeting people is the reason given by Inès, who knew nobody, and forgetting work is Karim’s. Bernard already has his friends at the pétanque club.

4 → C. Karim “laisse souvent sa part aux autres” (often leaves his share to the others): he comes to forget the hospital, not for the harvest.

Trap: Inès says gardening did not interest her, but the text does not say she leaves her vegetables behind. For Bernard, on the contrary, they matter a lot.

5 → B. “Cet été, ce sont finalement les enfants du centre de loisirs voisin qui s’en chargeront” (this summer, in the end, the children from the nearby activity centre will take care of it): the association found help next door.

Trap: the rota already existed last year and the plants dried out anyway. Automatic watering was looked into, then “jugé trop cher” (judged too expensive).

6 → A. On the cars, “ils ont raison” (they are right), and she even signed their petition. On the noise, her answer is “non”: the meals already end at 9 p.m.

Trap: she does not give “la même réponse sur les deux points” (the same answer on both points). The noise is the residents’ complaint, not something she accepts.

Pourtant, à mon avis, tu devrais accepter cette proposition.greeting, reaction to the message and opinion stated straight away

Finalement, je ne voulais plus rentrer !personal experience: passé composé for the events, imparfait for the background

Tiens-moi au courant de ton choix !conclusion that respects the friend’s choice

Examiner's note: The letter does the three things asked, in order: a clear, justified opinion, a personal experience told in the past, then specific advice. The tone is that of a friend (“tu”, “Cher Julien”, “Je t’embrasse”) and the paragraphs are linked with simple but varied words (“d’abord”, “en plus”, “puis”, “finalement”, “bien sûr”). Two points are withheld. For vocabulary, the words are accurate but stay very common (“difficiles”, “formidables”, “une chance”): the letter rarely reaches for more precise words about work or feelings. For morphosyntax, the past tenses, the hypothesis (“si j’étais toi, je garderais”) and the future are correct, but the complex sentences are not very varied.

InstructionsComplete each sentence with the word or expression that fits.

  1. 1. Je ______ que ce film est trop long.

    • A doute
    • B trouve
    • C regrette

    • A peur
    • B honte
    • C hâte

    • A déçu
    • B content
    • C fier

    • A opinion
    • B avis
    • C conseil

1 → B. “Je trouve que” (I find that) gives an opinion and takes the indicative, which matches “est”.

Trap: “je doute que” (I doubt that) and “je regrette que” (I am sorry that) require the subjunctive (“soit”). The indicative “est” rules them out.

2 → A. After a feeling such as “ça m’étonne que” (it surprises me that), the verb goes in the subjunctive: “qu’elle ne soit pas encore arrivée”.

Trap: in French, surprise, joy, fear or regret + “que” trigger the subjunctive, even when the fact is real.

3 → C. “Avoir hâte de” means to look forward to something, which the end of the sentence confirms (“avec impatience”, impatiently).

Trap: all three words follow the pattern “avoir … de”. Only the meaning decides: you do not count the days impatiently when you are afraid (“peur”) or ashamed (“honte”).

4 → A. “Je m’attendais à mieux” (I expected better) expresses disappointment: only “déçu” (disappointed) fits the end of the sentence.

Trap: all three adjectives take “de” (“déçu de”, “content de”, “fier de”). Meaning decides: “content” (pleased) and “fier” (proud) are positive and contradict the rest of the sentence.

5 → B. The set phrase is “à mon avis” (in my opinion): it introduces a personal view.

Trap: French says “selon moi”, “d’après moi” or “à mon avis”, but not “à mon opinion”. And you give a piece of advice (“un conseil”), you do not say “à mon conseil”.
